Annihilation, destruction and attrition. Countless people have lost their lives in defense of their freedom and nothing can undo this. What can and must be done, however, is to rebuild Ukraine. To give the country and its future generations a perspective, beyond a just peace agreement. War-torn Ukraine is unable to do this alone. Europe will have to make a tremendous contribution, not only as a moral duty but also in its own interest. This will cost a fortune that the current and next generation in Europe will mainly have to bear.

But would the solution to this circumstance not be simpler and fairer to achieve? There are hundreds of billions in Russian state assets in Europe and other regions of the world that have been blocked as part of the sanctions against the aggressor. These financial resources should be released straightforwardly by a decision of the respective governments and made available for the rebuilding of Ukraine.

Please add your voice to this appeal, initiated by 131 Nobel Laureates, to increase the necessary public pressure on European governments on this issue. And just as importantly, forward this petition ideally to two or more people in your circle of family, friends and acquaintances and make them aware of it. This is the most efficient way to achieve an effective number of signatures!

Some 200 billion euros of these “frozen” Russian state assets alone are under European jurisdiction. Failure to seize these assets would doubly hit Europe:

(i) by returning them to Russia, they would render the biggest threat to Europe’s security 200 billion Euro more severe and

— to the same extent —

(ii) they would fail to make a contribution to rebuilding Ukraine,

putting — effectively — a total financial burden of € 400 billion on the shoulders of the next generation of Europeans. We appeal to the Leaders of Europe to use assets of the Russian Federation for ending the war and rebuilding war-torn Ukraine. In the interest of Europe and its next generation.
